Similar to a Gua Sha beauty tool, a Jade Roller is a simple yet very useful beauty tool that can transform the look and feel of your skin over time. And as simple as my jade roller looks, especially when compared to some of my other beauty tools, I’ve definitely Googled ‘how to properly use a jade roller’ and have been wondering for few months if I’ve been doing it right or wrong.
Knowing how to properly use a jade roller or Gua Sha tool is very important because when used properly, a facial massage using a jade roller or Gua Sha tool has so many benefits including improving lymphatic drainage, decreasing dark circles, boosting collagen production, reducing puffiness, and evening out skin tone, to name a few.
I first learned about the benefits of using a jade roller about a year ago, and because I’ll try (almost) anything to improve the look, feel, and health of my aging late-30-something-year-old skin, I quickly purchased my first Jade Roller and Gua Sha Set and started practicing with my new beauty tool.
History of the Jade Roller
In Chinese culture, the use of Jade Rollers and Gua Sha tools have been used for many centuries. Used as a massage therapy aid and to relieve muscle tension, the natural healing power of the Jade stone has been thought to be able to bring back youth and energy.
The earliest use of jade for its healing power and health benefits I’ve found, or a variation of what we know as a jade roller today, dates back to the early Mayan and Egyptian times, over 5000 years ago.
According to jaderollerbeauty.com:
“Jade is believed to heal stressed organs and discharge toxins. It slows the process of cell aging by promoting turnover, and strengthens the body’s natural defenses and healing power by increasing chi, a revitalizing energy in the body.
In the same way that your body feels alive and refreshed after cardio, Jade rolling will have the same effect on the facial muscles.”
How to Use Jade Roller to De-Puff
I don’t know about you but for me, my main area of concern has been the area around my eyes. I have super dark circles, puffiness, and the whole area just looks OLD.
I like to use the smaller end of the roller to go over the eye socket, hoping it will magically reduce my old lady eye bags. (fingers crossed)
How to Use a Jade Roller On Your Face
STEP ONE: Wash your face. You want your skin to be clean before you use your jade roller.
STEP TWO: Moisturize/Lubricate. Apply your favorite facial serum, oil, or moisturizer.
*** The moisturizer will help the Jade Roller glide easily across your skin, and alternatively, the Jade Roller will help the nutrients from the face oil absorb deeper into your skin.
STEP THREE:. Get ready to ROLL.
***important*** The key is to roll in only 1 direction and not to roll back and forth.
Begin the massage by following the numbers and arrows on the diagram below. Use the bigger side of your Jade Roller for the gray arrows and use the smaller side of the roller along the green arrows.
For each number/arrow, repeat the stroke 3-5 times then move onto the next one.
