Layering:  How To Master The Order of Face Products

To get the most out of your skin care products, utilizing the proper layering order in your skin care routines is vital.  By mastering the order of face products in your skin regimen, you’ll be able to fully benefit from each skincare product’s ingredients, properties, and benefits. 

When it comes to your skincare routine, think ‘thin-to-thick’ or remember to apply in the order of the product’s consistency.  The thin-to-thick strategy works for makeup as well.  I used to use a heavy moisturizer and then pile on foundation and powder, which would clog pores, cause breakouts, and left me with an overall caked look.

Skin Care Routine

There are many factors to consider when applying skin care products, one of which is how quickly your skin will absorb the product.  Some experts believe that waiting a few minutes before applying each product can give your skin time to absorb the ingredients more evenly.   

If a product is too watery, this may cause the product to be absorbed too quickly, resulting in a loss of some of the active ingredients.  On the other hand, if the product is too thick, it may not absorb as quickly.

When applying your moisturizer, first pat it into your skin with your palms (try not to rub with force), and then wait about two minutes to allow the product to set into your skin before applying your serum or eye cream.  If you apply the serum immediately after applying the moisturizer, the moisturizer may have already been absorbed by the time you start applying the serum.

The same theory applies to sunscreen.  When applying sunscreen, first spread it over your face and neck, then wait about five minutes before applying makeup.  It is important to allow the sunscreen to absorb into your skin so that the sunscreen SPF levels can be higher.

The 3 Core Skin Care Routine Steps

I know you’ve probably read numerous articles describing all sorts of skin care steps with so many different products, you don’t know where to even begin.  Today I’m here to tell you to fear not, all you need to know to get the most benefit out of your skin care routine, regardless of your skin type, is to start with just three simple steps:

1.  Cleanse

2.  Treat

3.  Moisturize

Most of you get what we mean with step 1 ‘cleanse’ – wash your face, but you’re probably wondering what ‘treat’ means in terms of your skin care routine.  In addition to keeping your complexion looking youthful and amazing, the goal of any good skin care routine is to target problem areas.  So ‘treating’ means incorporating serums or creams packed full of beneficial ingredients like vitamin C, retinol, alpha hydroxy acids, and others, depending on your skin type and the results you want to see.

In this article, we will go over three different ‘treat’ steps – toner, serum, and eye cream.  Depending on your specific skin needs and concerns, these steps could be used or skipped but we thought this would be a good start for anyone.

Building your ideal skin care routine starts with taking care of your cleanse and ends with your moisturizing steps, but it’s the ‘treat’ steps in the middle that can really make a difference over time.  By including specific skin care products that target your specific skin concerns, like dullness, dryness, fine lines wrinkles, or dark spots, you can help improve the health, appearance, and aging of your skin.

Your Morning Skin Care Routine

To keep your skin looking healthy and youthful, follow a daytime skin care routine that includes cleansing, toning, and moisturizing.  This guide outlines each step in detail, so you can start seeing results right away.

Step 1: Cleanser

To start your skincare routine, face cleansing is essential and should be the first step in any skin care routine.  However, different people have different skin types and needs.

If you have dry skin or sensitive skin, it’s possible to irritate your skin by over-cleansing.  If you do have sensitive skin, try washing your face with a gentle facial cleanser only at night and rinsing your face with just water to start your am skincare routine.  The best facial cleansers should be gentle and free of sulfates and soap chemicals to avoid stripping your skin of its natural oils. 

Step 2a:  Toner

Step 2b: Antioxidant Serum

Two types of sunscreen formulas:

Your Nighttime Skin Care Routine

Your nighttime skincare routine is the perfect time to give your skin the nutrients it needs and active ingredients it needs. Your skin regenerates and repairs itself while you sleep, so make sure your nighttime routine will include the three basic steps we went over earlier – cleanse, treat and moisturizer, along with some extra treatment for best results.

Step 1:  Cleanse

At night, your first step should be to get your makeup off gently and thoroughly so you can start by removing it with a dedicated makeup remover before washing your face with a gentle cleanser.

If you’re looking to achieve a more thorough cleanse, you can try a double cleanse.  A double cleanse involves using a cleansing oil first to dissolve your makeup and then washing your face again with your regular cleanser.  This will leave your skin feeling refreshed and super clean!

Step 2a:  Toner

As always, the toner step is optional but if using it, apply it in the same way you did during your daytime routine.

Step 2b:  Serum

Step 2c:  Eye Cream

Using the same technique as in the daytime, apply eye cream gently to your eye area, using products with active ingredients that target your skin concerns.

Step 3:  Moisturizer Or Night Cream

When it comes to skincare ingredients, it’s important to read the ingredient list carefully. Some ingredients can be harmful if applied incorrectly, while others may be beneficial but need to be used in moderation. Here are five of the worst skincare ingredients to avoid:

  1. Fragrance:  If you have sensitive skin, it’s best to avoid products with scents altogether. Fragrances are one of the most common causes of allergic reactions, so choosing unscented products is your best bet.  Many artificial fragrances contain irritant chemicals that can cause skin problems. For example, these fragrances may contain solvents and preservatives that can cause irritation and even skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
  2. Parabens:  Although parabens have been linked to cancer in some studies, they are still commonly used in skincare products because of their ability to hinder the growth of mold and bacteria. Some of the most common parabens used in skin care products include methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben.  Parabens could also interfere with hormone production by binding to estrogen receptors, a key molecule in the body that helps to regulate reproductive hormones. When this happens, your body may produce less estrogen which could adversely affect regular reproductive function in both men and women.
  3. Alcohol:  Alcohol has many uses in skincare products. Some of these purposes are as a preservative, to help products dry faster, and to improve the appearance of pores.  Denatured alcohols, such as ethanol, isopropanol, and propanol, are the most irritating for the skin. These alcohols are usually found in toners, soaps, and cleansers. They can be very harsh and overly drying for your skin which can damage its natural barrier making it hard for your skin to retain moisture. If used often these alcohols may cause dryness or irritation in your skin.
  4. Phthalates:   There are many types of phthalates, and they’re not all listed on labels. Phthalates can be found in skincare products, particularly those with a strong scent or that are meant to keep you dry. This chemical is also used to retain a perfumed scent, but it’s widely linked to health concerns. For example, it’s been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues in both women and babies.
  5. Polyethylene glycol (PEGs):  Some people might be concerned about the possible connection between polyethylene glycol, which is a chemical thickener, and petroleum-derived products. This substance can sometimes be found in cream-based products and is known to be a common skin irritant.
