I’ve been reading so much about adrenal fatigue, candida, leaky gut, pyroluria, anxiety and depression and all of these problems are or can be related in some way to Copper Toxicity.
Have you heard of Copper Toxicity?
I kind of knew about it but didn’t know much. I’ve spent this afternoon reading about this condition and I wanted to share with you.
“Copper toxicity is a central factor in many of today’s modern disease epidemics including cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, schizophrenia, OCD, ADD, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease.
Copper toxicity is even a major player in women’s health issues such as estrogen dominance, candida overgrowth, and PMS.” (source)
Here are a few symptoms of Copper overload:
Fatigue and exhaustion, adrenal depletion, hypothyroid, nausea, racing mind (feeling wired but tired), panic attacks, depression, hair loss and/or whitening of hair, brain fog / spaciness, concentration and memory problems, high anxiety, irritability, ,emotional numbing / apathy / despondency, ruminating negative thoughts, loss of sex drive, OCD and Relationship OCD (ROCD), Withdrawal/isolation, chocolate cravings, anemia and the list goes on! When the copper levels are high, zinc is then out of balance. Zinc is an essential nutrient which helps with stress, memory, and mood. When one is out of balance, the other will be too.
Signs of a Copper and Zinc Imbalance
“A variety of health concerns may be signs that you have a copper and zinc imbalance. Based on the average American’s diet, it is most likely that people are experiencing symptoms resulting from elevated copper levels and a deficiency in zinc.
- Night blindness
- Age related macular degeneration
- Emotional disturbances
- Frequent panic attacks and headaches
- A slow recovery rate from healing ulcers, wounds and even stretch marks
- A high rate of chronic infections and sickness
- Mental lethargy or chronic fatigue
- Gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea
- Reduced appetite and weight loss
- Skin problems such as blisters and roughness

I’ve written about Pyroluria which is linked to copper toxicity/low zinc too:
“Pyroluria is a condition that has also been known as KPU, kryptopyroluria and Hydroxyhemopyrrolin-2-one and HPL. Pyrlouria was first identified by Abram Hoffer, MD, PhD several decades ago. Pyroluria is often found among those with neurological inflammation and symptoms such as behavior disorders, schizophrenia, Lyme disease and OCD.
Here are some symptoms from the above Dr. Jockers article regarding Pyroluria:
“chronic anxiety, poor stress tolerance, digestive issues, poor immunity, joint pain, acne or eczema, mood swings and poor short term memory. These individuals often have difficulty digesting and absorbing protein and they are easily wrecked by increasing stress.”
Pyroluria appears to be genetic, and in some instances is induced by severe levels of oxidative stress. Pyroluria causes an over-production of pyrroles, and as such causes rapid depletion of Vitamin B-6 and zinc levels. As zinc values are depleted, copper levels accumulate. This is likely due to the fact that copper and zinc are antagonists, and zinc is essential for the formation of metallothionein, a protein/antioxidant that binds to free copper ions.” Source
As I am delving deeper into my own health issues, I’m learning a lot! It’s very interesting to see how so many things are connected and several conditions are linked but not necessarily treated by your general MD. Unless you dive into research, you would never know these conditions existed.
I’m a healthy person who exercises, eats only nutrient rich foods, drinks lots of water and yet I have a variety of health issues which look to be separate, but as I keep reading and researching, I find they are linked.
I encourage you to do as much reading and researching as you can if you are suffering from poor health! The answers are out there.
